• FRESH FOR FEBRUARY! Tortured Soul releases their first single of 2017

Tortured Soul makes good on the promise of new music with this new funk‐laced track

    “U LIVE 2 FAR AWAY”

WITH REMIXES BY JKRIV, THE LOUNGE LIZARDS, CRYOSIS, CORNELIUS MASHILANE, AND JOHN CHRISTIAN URICH

Starting fresh for 2017, Tortured Soul makes good on the promise of new music with this funk‐laced new track.

The original mix of “U LIVE 2 FAR AWAY”, written and produced by John Christian Urich, Tortured Soul’s primary composer, producer, arranger, as well as, vocalist and drummer, has the timeless song structure, signature hooky vocals, smooth rhodes, and tight bass that is classic Tortured Soul….but by slowing down to a nu disco tempo, Tortured Soul steers a little left of house and straight towards funk with this super catchy release that has them doubling down on their promise to get the girl.

JOHN CHRISTIAN URICH‘s remix / dub has a beautiful, longing, calypso feel that uncovers layers of vocals and instrumentation present in the original, but is dramatically reconstructed to create a more serious mood . You can feel the longing for love like a Butterfly senses impending rain. The arrangement features Isamu Mcgregor’s flowing Rhodes, Jordan Scannella’s deep groove, Mark Tewarson’s sweetly syncopated guitar, and John Christian Urich’s signature, gripping, hook‐laden styled vocals.

JKRIV, former/original bassist and a founding member of Tortured Soul, takes “U live 2 Far Away” in a direction that is now his signature style: disco‐laced, clean, and funky productions that have garnered serious attention recently as masterfully crafted disco reworks and original productions under his JKriv, JKriv & The Disco Machine, and Deep & Disco monikers. His productions have found their way into the live sets of many luminary DJs, such as Derrick Carter, Andrew Weatherall, Greg Wilson Rahaan, and Zimmer, as well as gaining mainstream support from Drake and Majid Jordan in their Apple Music OVO Radio show and legendary BBC Radio 1 DJ Pete Tong.

THE LOUNGE LIZARDS, comprised of DJ Kemit and Luke Austin, readily accepted the musical challenge to flip “U LIVE 2 FAR AWAY” and add their flavor. Their rendition is tastefully brought back up to a respectable house tempo with a deep, pushy, psychedelic swing that creates a dark but friendly vibe guaranteed to get the freaks spinning on the dance floor.

DJ Kemit, formerly of Grammy Award winning Hip Hop group Arrested Development, and has since worked with the likes of Cooly’s Hot Box (in a collaboration with John‐Christian Urich on “Wasted Time”), Eric Roberson, Lady Alma Horton, N’Dambi, Music Soul Child (Tour), Tasha Larae, Josh Milan, Rich Medina, Lil John Roberts, Robert Glasper & ChrisDave.

Luke Austin is best known for his keyboard work on Jill Scott’s “Fools Gold”, Tisha Cambell’s “Steel Here” and B Slades cover of Janet Jackson’s “Alright”. If you have been paying attention, you might recognize Luke as a touring keyboardist for Mary J Blige, Destiny Child, and R Kelly.

For a second time in as many new single releases, Tortured Soul accepted a remix submission by newcomers CRYOSIS.

The tasteful, clean, poppy sound they brought to the track direct from Mumbai, is a perfect marriage of the TS soulfulhouse style with a super modern sensibility. Cryosis is Siddhant Mishra and Sangeet Patnaik, a production duo to watch, who specialize in Electro house/Complextro/Hybrid Trap.

CORNELIUS MASHILANE out of South Africa, grabbed Tortured Soul’s attention when they heard his release “Heaven” on Dopewax Records. From Pretoria, this young up‐and‐coming producer/remixer takes “U Live 2 Far Away” and goes pure house with a tough beat and skillfully re‐infuses it with a classic deep soulful sound that comes full circle by incorporating harmonies that create a lovely vibe reminiscent of some of Tortured Soul’s first releases.

Tortured Soul is 100% LIVE, modern, deep, soulful, house music. The band’s frontman and songwriter, John‐Christian Urich, can be seen simultaneously drumming and singing with effortless mastery, while bassist, Jordan Scannella, and keyboardist, Isamu McGregor, virtuosically generate the pulsating accompaniment that has been making bodies sweat for years and continues to be what Gilles Peterson called “The future of house music.” Influenced by the classic songcraft of Prince, Heatwave and Kool & The Gang, and likened to The Roots of house music, Tortured Soul’s sound is reminiscent of neo‐soul groups like Jamiroquai or Brand New Heavies, while also being deeply saturated in the contemporary freshness of house purveyors like Joey Negro, Louie Vega, Soul Clap and Disclosure.
